Signs to look for

Common water problems in Long Island homes

Most of what people notice comes down to one of these three. Each is treated differently, which is why the assessment comes before any recommendation.

Hardness that changes by town

None of the water suppliers here soften their water, and hardness swings from one district to the next. In 2025 the Dix Hills Water District reported a top figure of 51.2 mg/L, while the Water Authority of Great Neck North reported readings up to 179 mg/L, about 10.5 grains per gallon.

Chlorine at the tap

Every water supplier in our area disinfects with chlorine, added at the well or pump station. It protects the water on its way through the mains, and it is also the taste and smell many people notice in a glass from the kitchen tap.

Bathtub filling with water

Naturally acidic groundwater

All of Long Island's tap water is pumped from the aquifers under the island, and that groundwater is naturally acidic. The Suffolk County Water Authority puts its raw pH as low as 4.5 and raises it with lime before delivery, and several local districts add sodium hydroxide for the same reason.

Chlorine, chloramine and PFAS

And the things in tap water you cannot taste.

Chlorine

You can usually taste it.

Can you taste it?Usually

Chloramine

Most people cannot.

Can you taste it?Rarely

PFAS

Nobody can.

Can you taste it?Never

Which is why the assessment starts with what your utility publishes about Long Island water, not a guess.

Know your water

A plain guide to home water treatment on Long Island

The short version of what we explain on every call, so you can tell which system your home actually needs.

What a water softener does

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Heated or left to dry, those minerals turn into the white scale on fixtures, glass shower doors and the inside of a water heater.

A softener swaps those minerals out before the water reaches the rest of the house, so scale stops forming and soap lathers the way it should.

Whole home filtration or a pitcher filter

A pitcher or fridge filter treats a few glasses at a time. A whole home carbon stage sits where the water enters the house and treats every tap and every shower.

Our whole home system puts the softener and the carbon stage in one tank, which keeps the footprint small.

When reverse osmosis makes sense

Reverse osmosis is a drinking water stage. It goes under the kitchen sink on its own faucet and takes out dissolved solids that softening and carbon do not touch.

It is the right add for anyone who drinks a lot of tap water or cooks with it. More on reverse osmosis.

City water or a private well

City water is treated before it reaches you, and the utility publishes a yearly report on what is in it. A private well has no report, and what comes out of it can change through the year.

That is why wells are sized on their own. See well water treatment.

About Empire True Water

Local water treatment, sized to your home

Empire True Water serves homes across Long Island, from Great Neck and Roslyn out to Syosset, Cold Spring Harbor, Commack and Smithtown. Every supplier here draws from the same aquifers, but hardness and treatment change from one district to the next, so every recommendation starts from your address and what you are seeing at the tap.

  • Sized to your house. Tank size follows how many people live there and how much water they use.
  • Built for your supply. City water and private wells get different equipment, because they carry different problems.
  • Drinking water included. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap comes with the whole home system.
  • Your home, treated like ours. We show up when we said we would, explain what is in your water in plain language, and recommend only what your home needs.

Questions

Water softener and filtration questions

If yours is not here, send it with your assessment request. There is no wrong question about your own water.

We go through your water source, what you are seeing at the tap and how many people live in the house. You leave with the system we would install and the exact price. The assessment is free.

It depends on the size of the household and what is in the water. You get the exact number in writing after the free assessment, before anything is ordered.

The number we put in writing is the number. If something in your house would change it, you hear about it before any work starts.

Hardness and chlorine are different problems. A softener handles scale, a carbon stage handles taste and smell, and the whole home system does both in one tank.

Wherever the water enters the house, which is most often a basement, a utility room or a garage.

Enough floor for the tank and the salt cabinet, plus room to open the cabinet lid and reach the bypass.

Keep the salt cabinet topped up. The system rinses itself on a schedule, and the setup notes cover the rest.

Yes. A private supply changes through the year, so it gets sized differently from a municipal one. We handle both.
